United States and Latin America
During the last three decades, most countries in the Latin Americas are victims of the downfall and failure of their government administration. They have experienced various shifts in power, economical instability and various interventions by the US to their political, economic and social facets of everyday life (Smith 1999). The connection between the United States and the Latin countries can be traced back as early as 1908 with the US troops intervening in Nicaragua, Honduras, and Cuba to mention a few. The US also arbitrated with the government of the Dominican Republic, Panama, El Salvador, Ecuador, Brazil and Guatemala (Grandin 2006). One will quickly notice just by reading history books that the US is all over the Latin American countries and has intervened through military acts, economical decisions, investments, and coup de etats.
The United States often pressure the political leaders and convince them to approve movements and policies favoring the United States of America. The CIA also played an important role in overthrowing key leaderships in the Latin countries that were against US policies and agreements (La Rosa 2007). All the details about these acts were hidden from the people of the respective Latin countries. On the other hand, the United States of America along with its capitalists, investors and businessmen took action in setting up businesses committed in energy, agriculture, iron ore, petroleum and textile.
In a nut shell, anywhere the United States was engaged they made sure that these countries become aware of their presence. It has also been a regular act by the US to penalize and threaten Latin countries with regards to support and foreign aid whenever certain US policies are not followed and implemented (Smith 1999). On the other hand, these Latin American nations responded to these interventions in a variety of ways. One significant response would be the formation of the Union of South American Nation which greatly helped each of them to uphold their plans and ideologies forming an alliance of 19 Latin American countries together with the US to undertake commitments and help each country to develop economically and due to the intense intervention of the US a significant number of Latin countries changed their government to a form of dictatorship.
The role of the United States was not a difficult one to resolve. Ultimately, it is obvious that they made their decisions in accordance to their plans which will benefit their country much more and in the long term. Little sympathy and encouragement was showed by the US during its years of intervention and only focused on attaining their goals which ended in rallies, dictatorship, and misery of most of the Latin nations. The US still maintained their capitalistic mindsets and basically their colonial ways of controlling and conquering a nation. What the United States has to do is look back in time and reflect on their own dealings with the British people and stop exploiting these Latin countries. Furthermore, they must reveal the truth and stop getting intervening.
