Reaction on the Culture Warrior Test

The Culture Warrior is a controversial book written by Bill OReilly that tackled on the debate between the traditionalists and the secular-progressives (SPs). According to OReillys definition, traditionalists are firm believers in the family unit and place emphasis on spirituality, selflessness, and charitable causes while SPs are virtual socialists who are hostile to Christianity and particular traditional American values (OReilly, 2006). Taking this in account, I took the online test to see where I categorize myself within the Culture Warrior spectrum. According to the test, I have SP beliefs but not committed to either side.

I answered yes to these following questions a) Do you believe the definition of marriage should include homosexuals b) Do you believe in income redistribution--that is, the government taxing affluent Americans at a higher proportional rate in order to fund entitlements to the less well off c) Do you think suspected terrorists captured overseas are entitled to Geneva Convention protections-that is, the same rights that military people are afforded (OReilly Website, 2010) . I found out that my belief in equality showed that I can never be an extremist on either side. I believe that homosexuals should enjoy the same rights as any citizen in the marriage context but this practically clash with my belief in income redistribution. It is quite an irony that equality has a vague disposition in the perspective of the traditionalists and SPs. OReilly spoke so badly about the SPs but I do not see what is so wrong for campaigning changes in the US laws. This is the period where diversity is accepted widely in the world and for the US not to follow that is hypocrisy. I believe that there is nothing wrong in promoting changes within the community if this would push the country better relations within the states.
