The State of the American Community

Globalization is gradually entering the United States. For the past 50 years, the countrys involvement in world affairs changed the overall focus of political expediency. The country was forced to open itself more and more to foreign culture, goods, and lifestyle. In the realm of economics, trade barriers were simultaenously demolished over the past 30 years to improve the economic competitiveness of the country. Tariffs, import quotas, and other trade generating revenues were reduced to fulfill this immediate goal. In the realm of politics, the country became more and more an auxiliary entity of multinational agencies. As Professor Huntington argued, the essence of globalization is the hallowing of the state. The state retained sovereignty at the cost of collective power. There were, however, fierce opposition from the traditionalists who viewed the political minimization of the state as an impediment to political development. As such, the advance towards a hallowed state was difficult.

In the realm of social relationship, interracial marriages are nowadays common. This is a sign that the country is moving towards a true multiracial society. This may be also a sign of increasing infiltration of foreign culture. Indeed, the procrastination of social relationships lead primarily to the restructurating of the American community. Norms, roles, and status are recreated based on this situation. This social globalization is a reality  the fact that the world is becoming a unified community attests to this reality. Indeed, the United States or the American community is a reflection of this reality.
